TDM #1

➥ Arrival

(cw: potential for severe disorientation/vertigo, claustrophobia, arachnophobia, body horror)

It happens in the blink of an eye. You may have been asleep. You may not have. You may have stepped through a door or turned a corner. You may have seen a flicker of something at the corner of your vision and turned to look. Or maybe you didn't.

It doesn't matter. What matters is that you find yourself somewhere entirely new and entirely unfamiliar. The arrival point is not always the same. (If you're lucky, it might be a canteen or an open office. If you're not, well... you aren't claustrophobic, are you? Or arachnophobic. These ducts do seem to be a bit cobwebby.) There is no one waiting for you but you don’t seem to be alone, either. Even in a janitor’s closet or the bathroom, you’ll find at least one person who seems to be just as out of place as you are.

If characters have arrived in a location devoid of NPCs, they may want to work together to figure out what is going on... or to avoid their 'kidnappers.' If you’ve arrived in the middle of the entry foyer or the gym, there may well be a few people who startle a bit at your arrival and try to approach (or discreetly leave the room... where are they going?). Will you cooperate or fight? Do you even understand what they're saying? You might need to find a translator, if you’re not immediately willing to follow a stranger.

After characters follow their new hosts (or are forcibly taken in) there will be a limited tour and the chance to settle in at the ADI-provided housing. (Do you enjoy living with strangers? Well. It's a new situation to navigate, anyway.)

➥ Sticks and Stones

(cw: hallucination, potential mind-control)

Weird things happen in Dogtown, everyone knows it. The Apocalypse Disruption Initiative (ADI) is not above taking advantage of that to test out the waters for its newest arrivals. They're not looking to send anyone to their death, though. That's far too much paperwork, you'd been assured with a wink from the employee who'd directed you to the park trailhead. You've been left with another person. Maybe they're a new arrival, as well, or a more seasoned 'veteran.' Either way, you're together for the next while and you've been asked to find and record any paranormal activity in the park. You have your phones and any other equipment you might have brought with you. Those who succeed in documenting anything peculiar will receive a $100 reward to be used as they see fit.

This month, there seems to be something odd afoot with the stones around the park. Instead of the questionably useful advice they offer, there is, instead, something embarrassingly or horrifically true about you carved into the stone. Trying to show your companion or gauge their reaction will net nothing; they will simply see their own truth. It's only when you admit to what's on the stone that it seems to become visible to others or any camera in your possession.

Take a picture. The least you deserve for the trouble is some money.

➥ I Will Survive

"We'll have others with you, but all of you will be out on your own for missions, so to speak," the ADI employee who had led you down to the underground training facility explained. "You'll need to have some basic skills. Even if you're not going out soon or ever… it's safer to know these things."

Basic skills, in this case, appear to mean survival and weapons training. The room you've been brought to on Floor B3 below ADI Headquarters is a massive, underground gym, and there are sections set up for various skills practice. One side of the gym is dedicated to fighting: bare-knuckles, wrestling, knives, and tasers are all out on display. There are also a few guns, but those are reserved for people who can prove they can manage the other weapons first. The other side has areas for fire-making, building a shelter, navigating without a phone, supply preparation, cooking, and basic first-aid. Through a side door, there's also a small pool where people are being taught the basics of swimming.

Any or all of these skills would be useful in a dangerous situation, and there aren't enough native ADI employees to cover training for all of them. If you show that you're proficient with something, you'll be asked to man one of the areas to assist in training others. If you're at a loss and looking lost, you will be pushed toward whatever skills practice area is physically closest to you, whether you wanted to learn anything about that or not. Best make the most of it… and try not to kill anyone or burn anything down.

Even those who have refused ADI Housing and taken themselves to Bonnie's Flophouse will find that they're welcome for this training under the strict understanding that no supernatural abilities will be used. Bonnie will have informed them of it and helped them get to ADI to ensure they learn some of the things they might need to survive... and also just to bond with the people they'll be working with for the foreseeable future.

➥ Shifting Perspective

(cw: body horror, implication of near-drowning, violence, potential for blood, gore, drowning, death)

The beaches around Gloucester are numerous and varied with reported supernatural activity at many, if not most of them. For those working with ADI, they'll receive the direction in a mass email from Reyes Amador, the assistant to the Head of ADI. For those not technically working at ADI, Bonnie will provide the same information.

All,

We have received reports of strange noises and sightings at Coffin Beach. Please take at least one other person and investigate. A $300 bonus will be offered to those who bring back evidence of the source of these reports.

Take Care of Yourselves,
Reyes

Those who head to Coffin Beach will find that the sand beneath their feet squeaks softly with each step, like the faint sound of a poorly-maintained hinge protesting their movements. It makes stealth especially difficult, and those who wish to maintain their cover would do well to stay farther up into the vegetation and off the beach, itself. There aren't any houses out this way, just coastal marshes, the beach, and some higher ground with low-growing shrubs, tall grasses, and thin trees.

For the patient, those who wait for night to fall, they will be rewarded when they hear the sound of someone crying. Searching the beach, they will be able to spot a young person who appears to have washed up in a kayak on the beach. The young person is visibly injured in some way with blood coming out of them. Those who approach cautiously may get the sense that there is something not quite right about this person. Man or woman, their face is too long, their angles too sharp.

There is something wrong. It's not the injury.

There is something very wrong with what this person is.

They will not respond to any calls or move from where they lie, half-submerged in the surf. Anyone who approaches within a few feet will discover they're not nearly as helpless as they seem to be, though. The person will burst from the water with a powerful thrust, attempting to tackle anyone nearby and bite them. The person's face transforms into a long, fanged maw, trying to rip and tear and drag their prey into the ocean with them, away from any safety.

➥ Mod Notes
  • ARRIVAL: Two people will always arrive in the same general location together. Arrivals occur throughout the early month, not all on the same day or in the same place. Arrivals are not naturally fluent in English/other languages immediately upon arrival. Characters may attempt to evade capture, but they will eventually be snagged before they can leave the building. Please refer to the Arrival page for details regarding the arrival and onboarding process.

  • STICKS AND STONES: If so desired, to facilitate CR, characters may feel themselves compelled to ask about the stones when they see their truth written on it. Resisting the compulsion will become more and more difficult as time goes on.

  • I WILL SURVIVE: Characters may be students or trainers in this scenario. They might be able to get away with small displays of supernatural abilities if they want to risk it and if they find themselves with the necessary reserves of power. Anything significant will have them immediately removed and asked not to return to ADI for a few days.

  • SHIFTING PERSPECTIVE: Characters may fight off, capture, or kill the creature. If they successfully capture it and bring it back to ADI (or call for someone to come and do that for them), they will receive a significant monetary bonus beyond the promised $300 for their work. If characters successfully kill and document the kill, they will also receive the bonus and instructions to push the body out to sea. If a character is taken by the creature, they will be killed. Please bear in mind that if a character dies in the TDM prompt, they are dead. A different version who doesn't have TDM memories may be apped in their place.

Peter Osborne | The Exorcist

➥ Sticks and Stones

[ There's no better mission to place Peter on than an expedition into the forest. The "paranormal" tagline, though, is little more than an afterthought in his mind. Every national park or forest preserve is haunted if you ask enough locals, so he pays this warning no mind. It'll be an overly curious black bear no longer afraid of humans, maybe a few punks trying to start an urban legend, nothing more. ]

Ever do any tracking?

[ He's not banking on another forester, but it'll be good to know if he's got another pair of skilled eyes to help with this wild goose chase. ]

➥ I will Survive

[ Peter can be found all over the gymnasium. He's in his element here teaching survival skills—first-aid, trauma care, navigation, foraging, fire setting, hunting, tracking, all of it. You name it, this wildlife officer can teach it.

When it comes to the combat range, though, he sticks to firearms and archery. At 56, he is secure in his masculinity to admit that he can't keep up with the young'uns in close combat. Perhaps he could be persuade if you really want to whoop on an old man, like the soulless bastard you are; otherwise, let him teach you how to skin a fish properly or identify edible flora. ]

➥ Shifting Perspective

[ Their attempts at calling out to the body submerged in the shallow surf have done no good. Whatever these strange sightings might be, it's not going to do the injured person in the waves to wait. ]

I'll need your help with this, all right? [ Hopefully his teammate isn't the squeamish type. This won't be easy if he has to do this on his own. ] I'll stabilize the neck and head, we'll roll them over, and then carry them out. Can you handle that?

[One look at Zhao was all the old man would need to know that the younger man had no experience in nature much less tracking. The look that Zhao gave enforced the idea, too, all raised eyebrow and cocked head with a load of sass heaped on. He drawled,]

What do you think? [He smirked.] Look, if you want me to track down a guy for you in the city, I've got ya covered. There's networks for that sort of thing, basic areas to cover, easy shit. But... nature ain't my thing. I've never even been to the forest before.

But if you want me to take down a tiger for ya... well... I've, uh, got some experience in that.

I'll keep it in mind next time I see one. [ Usually they would need a drug dealer for that. One with an exotic pet to get out of its basement cage and wreak havoc across the neighborhood. Not a very common occurrence on the Washington coast, but weirder things have happened on duty. ] Think a grizzly's more likely. Could send it your way, too, hm?

[...or a Chinese mafia that thought it was cool to have a tiger in their restaurant. What? Zhao thought it was cool. He signed off on it without thinking about it, okay? He's sorry about it. A little.]

Yeah, sure, why not? I'm sure I could handle another bear escapade. [Why did this guy sound like he was serious? Why would he have any experience in this sort of thing? That...was a good question with a very ridiculous story behind it.] Or, hear me out, we could just go in the opposite direction of the bear if we spot one. Things aren't easy to take out without proper gear, man.

ur the reason he drinks at night mafia dude!!

[personal profile] onfire 2021-07-13 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ That makes him laugh, and as soon as Peter lets it out he regrets it. It was mean-spirited, brought on by the moronic talk of an amateur explaining how they'd ninja their way out of a bear's territorial wrath. ]

Like your enthusiasm, but I'd recommend not doing that under most circumstances. [ He takes a left at the fork when they spot another trail marker leading up an easy incline. ] Think we'll find this paranormal something or other before we see a bear.
essenceofdeadlybeasts: (049)

ahaha... oops. so sorry~

[Zhao only grinned at the laughter, the expression a little shark-like as he watched the other carefully. As much as he seemed amiable, there was a danger to him just under the surface as well. He wasn't quite offended, yet...]

Running away, or walking away? [He knew enough to know what movement meant to predators. He also knew that he was pretty clueless about most things outside of the city. And if one of those two options weren't viable, then what the hell was he supposed to do? If the old man told him to 'play dead' that wasn't happening. He'd rather get into a fist fight with the animal.] You into the paranormal stuff they're selling? I mean, on the one hand... we did end up here through some pretty suspicious means. On the other... Iii can't say I've ever run into a ghost before.

[Although his friend did once but shhh. Zhao followed down the path Osborne took as well, trailing along with ease.]

[Meredith is so very out of her element with all the survival training, it's almost funny. She's standing there, taking notes as Peter explains some of the fine points of foraging for native plants, and she seems to be paying attention, but it's not hard to tell that she's pretty perturbed by the idea that these might be skills she needs for herself.]

Do you really think we're going to be sent out in the wilderness for long enough that we'll need to hunt for nuts and berries and mushrooms?
onfire: (slan_05)

[personal profile] onfire 2021-07-13 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Can't give you an answer to that. [ Although, from the soft sympathetic smile, he wishes he could. ] Maybe you will, maybe not. But that's not the real concern. It's everything that could go wrong.

A day trip in the forest can end tragically if you're not prepared.

[ That likely sounds dramatic to the young woman, but he has plenty of statistics, plenty of anecdotes, plenty of missing persons to back up his rationale. ]
henchgal: (beshadowed)

[personal profile] henchgal 2021-07-13 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping to mostly be working behind a desk, rather than going on many day trips in the forest. Though that hope may be futile.

[She squares her shoulder slightly.]

Alright, where do we start?

HEY STRANGER - I Will Survive

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-15 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Athena is very Unsure about all of this. She's been avoiding the beating-people-up areas entirely, and sort of drifting along the periphery of the survival training. She's a city girl. All of this is weird and intimidating and makes her think she's either going to end up a cult sacrifice in the woods somewhere or eaten by a bear.

She finally stops at the fire making station, glaring at it like it's personally offended her. The effect is enhanced by her black eye and split lip.]
I could whistle up a fire in my sleep if they'd let us use what we've got.

[ Ah, another "magic" person. He's been getting a lot of those who've given him quite the stink eye, as if he's personally responsible for their newfound handicap. It's rather adorable. Much like the city brats forced into summer camps by their parents. ]

I could get my lighter out, too, but that's not the name of this game. We've got to make do with what's lying around.

[ So, what do you say, young lady? Wanna swallow that pride and learn a thing or two? ]

[Gil is about as far from squeamish as a person can get. Forty years as a cop, twenty of them as a detective, ten of them in violent crimes--well, you see some things. He knows basic first aid, sure, but this is way out of his league. He'll defer readily to the guy who seems to know what he's doing.]

I'm with you. [His tone is even and calm. Even as he unholsters his service weapon, thumbing the safety off and keeping it pointed low for the time being. He shrugs in Peter's direction.] Feeling a bit paranoid for some reason. If something comes blasting up out of the surf I want to be able to put it down.

All right. [ With the man at his back, Peter takes the opportunity to move toward the shoreline, his own firearm still holstered at his waist. Not the greatest feeling when the hair on the back of his neck is standing up straight, but he needs his hands empty to secure the victim. ]

But I'll need you [ Just in reach of the bobbing body resting atop the shallow surf, he squats down by the head. ] in a minute—

[ More like now, actually, because the lifeless body breaks the water's surface and sinks its claws into Peter's arm. Its humanlike mouth suddenly splits at the seams, expanding open with gnarly teeth in a silent scream. ]
